The most important period of life is not the age of university studies but the period from birth to the age of six… for that is the time when intelligence itself, her greatest implement is being formed.” -Dr. Maria Montessori

The Pre-Primary Program at Children’s Meeting House is the first stage of our program and the foundation of our school’s educational approach. Montessori-trained teachers work with children individually and in small groups to foster and encourage new learning opportunities. Careful observation of each child leads to valuable insight about learning needs and styles that are incorporated in work and play.

Each oversized room provides space for up to 30 students distributed over a three-year age range. In all classes of the Pre-Primary program, materials, equipment, and furniture are child-size to allow for a maximum exploration and use of the senses. Each classroom is dynamic to meet the changing needs of the child. New materials are introduced daily to encourage physical, emotional, and intellectual growth. Classrooms are equipped with in-room boys’ and girls’ restrooms, large sinks for works requiring water, and exits directly to the outdoors.
The preschool child receives information on a wide range of topics and has a chance to explore them in ways that employ the child’s senses. Classroom instruction covers all these areas: art, botany, eco-learning lab, physical science, geography, handwriting, language, library, math, music, physical education, reading, Spanish, and zoology. Children have a chance to explore these topics in ways that employ their senses. Our curriculum emphasizes the development of perceptual and motor skills as well as social and academic abilities. Children are encouraged to develop good work habits and to share in the responsibility at their own pace and on their own level in the preschool classrooms with gentle guidance from dedicated teachers.

There are several options for preschool children to attend Children’s Meeting House.

Half Day (Part Time or Full Time Programs)
The Half Day-Part Time program meets Tuesday through Thursday each week, while the Half Day-Full Time program meets Monday through Friday each week, from 8:30 am to 11:30 am and is designed for children three or four years old. The children engage in a morning work period pulling from a variety of areas in the classroom to broaden their knowledge of the environment around them. They are offered Library, Spanish, Outdoor Education and Singing Circle throughout the week.

Half Day plus More Montessori
All Day preschool children may attend More Montessori, which offers care for 3 and 4 year olds. This program is an extension of the regular school day from 11:30am to 3:00pm. The children are continuing work in the More Montessori classroom. For the children still in need of a rest time, nap or downtime is offered. This program is offered on a contractual agreement of two to five days a week.

All Day
The All Day program meets Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm and offers older preschoolers and kindergarteners the opportunity to enrich and extend their morning experiences in the same environment. Children complete the morning work cycle, prepare for and have lunch, then spend the afternoon building upon their morning activities and engaging in additional activities such as music, physical education, and (of course) recess.
